After nearly two week and eighteen events at the Maryland State Poker Championship hosted by Maryland Live! Casino, the series has drawn to a close. Samuel Renauro and Daniel Markovitz took down the final tournament, Event #18: $400 Tag Team, for $2,640 each on the same day that Ben Gazzola bested Parker Talbot in heads-up play to scoop the $2,200 Main Event for a career best $110,578. Gazzola also takes home a NAPT Gold Pass valued at $10,000.

The NAPT now heads to Philly Live! Casino from August 21st to September 8th where three more Gold Passes will be up for grabs. The series culminates with the $2,200 Main Event that will run between September 4th and 8th. As with the Maryland State Poker Championship, PokerNews will be on hand to provide coverage.

Day 2 of Main Event Ends With Five Players Left

Xiaoqiong Liu

The Main Event at the Maryland State Poker Championship was scheduled to play down to six players on the second day but, after agreeing to finish out the level when at that point, Michael Bills was eliminated to leave the tournament five handed heading into the third and final day,

Xiaoqiong Liu emerged with the biggest stack, bagging an impressive 2,600,000 to put her in pole position to scoop the title. Pokerstars ambassador Parker Talbot came into the final table as the short stack but found a couple of doubles to finish the day second in chips with 2,365,000. Start of day chipleader Nicholas Verderamo rounds out the top three on 2,165,000.

A full recap of the day's play can be found here and the live reporting team will be on hand tomorrow to provide coverage through to the conclusion of the event.

Main Event Day 2 Underway

Nicholas Banyas

Day 2 of the Maryland State Poker Championship Main Event is underway with 22 players currently left in the running from a starting field of 245. For the second year in a row, the tournament has failed to meet its guarantee, which this year was set at $500,000. That means there is some extra value for anyone who did choose to enter.

Nicholas Banyas is the chipleader at the moment with a stack of 1,100,000, the only player so far to have made it into seven figure territory. Pokerstars ambassador Parker Talbot is also in contention with 448,000, good for a roughly tournament average stack.

Everyone who is left is guaranteed at least $4,511 with $110,578 and a NAPT Gold Pass up top for the winner. Check out our live updates here to stay abreast of the action.

Looking ahead to the rest of the day, Event #17: $1,100 Live! Stacks Championship kicks off at 2:15 p.m. local time. That tournament comes with a healthy $50,000 guarantee and is set to play down to a winner today.

Michael Bills

After 16 levels of play, the 100 players who entered Day 1a of the Maryland State Poker Championship have been whittled down to just 13. Each has now bagged for Day 2 where they will all be in the money.

Michael Bills had the most successful start to the tournament after spinning his starting stack up to 844,000, well ahead of Nicholas Banyas in second, who returns with 583,000. A full recap of the day's play can be found here.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Day 1b of the Main Event gets underway at 11:15 a.m. local time. That is the only tournament taking place until Event #16: $400 Black Chip Turbo Bounty shuffles up and deals at 6:15 p.m. Coverage of the Main Event will continue on the live reporting page while highlights from both that tournament and Event 16 can be found on this feed.

Besides coverage of the action of the day, PokerNews will be sitting down with Justin Arnwine, the winner of Event 10, and his wife Caitlyn Arnwine to discuss their recent exploits in poker.

Welcome Back to Coverage of the Maryland State Poker Championship

The 2024 Maryland State Poker Championship got underway on July 31st with the $600 Kickoff Event. Nick Kocman of Pennsylvania ended up coming out on top of a 892 entry field to claim $77,869. Another big winner from that event was 9th place finisher Daniel Bellis who, as the last qualifier standing, took home a coveted North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Gold Pass worth $10,000 in addition to the $7,787 payout.

As a reminder, the NAPT Gold Pass awards an entry into the $5,300 NAPT Main Event at Resorts World in Las Vegas as well as $2,900 for hotel accommodation and $1,800 to cover other expenses.

Since the Kickoff Event, the Maryland State Poker Championship has crowned 14 winners in side events. Full results can be found below.

Today's schedule sees the start of the much anticipated $2,200 Main Event. Flight A is already underway with the second final Day 1 taking place tomorrow before the field combines for Day 2 on Sunday, August 11th. At the time of writing, 54 players have registered and full updates of play can be found courtesy of the PokerNews live reporting team here.

Last year saw Isiah Ditoto take down a $5,300 version of the Main Event for a career best $221,853 after striking a heads-up deal with James Anderson. That tournament garnered 172 entries, thus failing to surpass the $1,000,000 guarantee. Those numbers are likely the reason the buy in for 2024 has been slashed by more than 50% and the guarantee cut down to just $500,000. Still, with the lower buy in, expect to see a larger field this year as the best of the best from the Maryland poker scene seek to etch their names in the state's poker history books.

While the Main Event is the marquee tournament, there are still plenty of other events set to take place over the next few days. Details of the remaining schedule can be found below.

Christian Harder Chooses Right Briefcase to Win Gold Pass

Maryland Mystery Bounty
Maryland Mystery Bounty

With Maria Konnikova still hanging around in the 6-Max Championship, a decision was made for the three bounty winners to choose and open their mystery bounty briefcases.

Christian Rose and Gilson De Oliviera had the first choice of briefcases before longtime pro Christian Harder had to choose between Briefcases #1 and #4. He chose #1.

It was the right choice as it soon after popped open to reveal a Gold Pass package to NAPT Las Vegas valued at $10,000.

Many cheered for Harder, though there were a few light-hearted boos.

"Of course Charter won the $10k!" someone said.

Harder has had plenty of luck in this poker room. Ten years ago, he took down the Maryland Live! Summer Series of Poker Main Event for $84,270.

Maria Konnikova Is the Final Bounty

Three down, one to go. The fight is on for the final ambassador bounty in the 6-Max Championship as Maria Konnikova looks to fend off those who are after the golden slip sitting next to her chips.

Arlie Shaban was the first to go before Jen Shahade lost a flip with queen-jack to a set of sevens to surrender her Gold Pass. Action slowed down from there before David Kaye fell to Christian Harder.

“Do I get a prize for being the last person?” she joked.

Konnikova found herself at risk moments ago before cracking queens by making aces full of fives.

Daniel Bellis
Daniel Bellis

Pennsylvania's Daniel Bellis outlasted Michael Lavin to be the last online qualifier standing in the $600 Kickoff Event to win a coveted Gold Pass package to NAPT Las Vegas in November.

Bellis had his first live cash earlier this year in Las Vegas and is now guaranteed a payday of at least $5,049 as he heads to dinner break with 14 players remaining.

You can read about Lavin's 18th-place elimination here, and it wasn't pretty.
